Geography - Darton Primary School

Intent

At Darton Primary School, we have designed our geography curriculum with the intent that our children will develop a genuine curiosity and fascination about the ever-changing world and its people that will remain with them for the rest of their lives. We want our children to have the desire to travel and explore as many places as they can and continue to expand their geographical knowledge as they grow up.

We will deliver a geography curriculum that ensures our children:

have an understanding of diverse places, people and environments around them
build on prior learning about physical and human processes and the formation and use of landscapes and environments
develop an understanding that the Earth’s features are interconnected and change over time
encourages exploration of their own environment and challenges pupils to make connections between their local surroundings and that of contrasting settlements
use local area and community to develop geographical skills and enquiry

Implementation

The National Curriculum 2014 and the Early Years Foundation Stage statutory framework 2021 provide the basis for our geography curriculum, which is then tailored to meet the learning and developmental need of the children in our school.

Teachers will plan geography using the newly developed progression document which will allow children to build upon prior knowledge and understanding. Knowledge organisers will be developed and introduced for teachers and pupils to use for each topic for reference and assessment purposes. They will map out the knowledge, vocabulary and skills needed to master the concepts. The progression documents demonstrate how each strand develops throughout each class, such as the ‘Place Knowledge’ strand where in KS1 children begin their journey by comparing Darton to a contrasting area in Britain before then comparing Darton to a contrasting area in a non-European country. In KS2 children then continue this progression as they compare Barnsley to urban and rural areas in Europe and North/South America before comparing London and other major cities to those in Asia.

Due to mixed classes, there are two cycles for classes 6, 7, 8 and 9 to ensure that all children are taught all of the geography objectives in their journey through key stage 2. Some objectives are repeated to embed and apply key knowledge and to make comparisons across different times and places.

Impact

Children will:

have a secure understanding of the geographical features of their local surroundings (Darton and Barnsley) and how it compares to other places around the world
have developed their locational knowledge significantly so that they can identify the seven continents and countries and major cities of places they have studied in further depth
have an understanding of how the Earth is changing and the factors that impact upon this
be competent when using maps and other geographical sources, including digital resources, to locate unfamiliar places and navigate along a route.
