At Darton Primary School, Personal Development and RSHE bring learning to life!
Through exciting activities, lively discussions, role play and hands-on experiences, children explore friendships, health and wellbeing, relationships and the wider world. They share ideas, tackle real-life challenges and discover practical skills that help them navigate everyday life.
From workshops and assemblies to enrichment opportunities and pupil leadership, learning extends beyond the classroom, giving children opportunities to put their knowledge into action.
Every lesson is an opportunity to explore, reflect, collaborate and grow, helping our pupils develop the confidence to understand themselves, connect with others and embrace the world around them.

At Darton Primary School, our Personal Development (PD) and Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE) curriculum aims to equip every child with the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to lead healthy, safe, happy and fulfilling lives. Using the PSHE Association’s Programme of Study, our carefully sequenced curriculum builds progressively on children’s prior learning through three core themes: Health and Wellbeing, Relationships, and Living in the Wider World. We aim to develop confident, resilient and respectful individuals who understand how to keep themselves safe, build positive relationships, make informed choices and contribute positively to their community and wider society. Through inclusive, age-appropriate and engaging learning experiences, we encourage children to explore different perspectives, celebrate diversity and develop the confidence to express their views, listen to others and navigate the challenges of growing up. Our curriculum reflects our school values of inclusion, positivity, kindness, respect, honesty and curiosity, ensuring that every child is supported to flourish as an individual and as a member of our school community.
Ultimately, we want our children to leave Darton Primary School well prepared for the next stage of their education and for life beyond the classroom, ready to Aim High, Work Hard, Achieve Together.

At Darton Primary School, our Personal Development (PD) and Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE) curriculum is taught through a carefully sequenced, progressive approach from EYFS to Year 6. We follow the PSHE Association’s Programme of Study and deliver a weekly discrete lesson, ensuring that every child has regular opportunities to develop the knowledge, skills and understanding needed to lead healthy, safe and fulfilling lives.
Our curriculum is organised into a two-year cycle for mixed-age classes, ensuring that all pupils access a broad and balanced programme of learning as they progress through school. The curriculum is cyclical in nature, with key themes and concepts revisited and developed over time. This repetition supports children in embedding essential knowledge, making connections with prior learning and applying their understanding to increasingly complex situations as they mature.
As with all subjects at DPS, PD/RSHE lessons follow our Accelerated Learning Cycle (ALC) approach, providing a consistent approach to teaching and learning. Lessons incorporate opportunities to connect with prior learning, activate existing knowledge, engage in collaborative and purposeful activities, demonstrate understanding and consolidate learning. This approach encourages active participation, discussion, reflection and the development of children’s oracy skills.
Assessment is primarily formative, with teachers continually assessing pupils’ understanding through discussion, questioning, observation, responses to scenarios and participation in activities. This enables teachers to identify misconceptions, address gaps in understanding and adapt teaching to meet pupils’ needs. Through this approach, we ensure that our PD/RSHE curriculum is inclusive, engaging and responsive, equipping every child with the confidence, knowledge and skills to navigate the challenges of growing up and make positive choices throughout their lives.

Our Personal Development workshops are carefully planned to enhance and deepen learning within our Personal Development curriculum. They provide pupils with dedicated opportunities to explore key themes from PSHE, including Health and Wellbeing, Relationships, and Living in the Wider World, through interactive, discussion-based learning.
Delivered in an age-appropriate and engaging way, these workshops enable pupils to develop their knowledge, understanding and confidence, reflect on their own experiences, and build the skills needed to make informed, responsible choices. By providing additional time to explore important topics in greater depth, the workshops reinforce and extend learning that takes place in the classroom.
Where appropriate, workshops are delivered by trained external organisations and professionals, allowing pupils to benefit from specialist expertise and real-world perspectives. Together, these experiences strengthen our Personal Development curriculum and help ensure that all pupils are well prepared to lead healthy, safe and successful lives.
