Geography at Darton Primary School

At our school, geography is an exciting journey around the world.

We want children to enjoy discovering different places, people and environments, and to understand how our world works and why it is so special. We encourage children to be curious geographers who ask questions about where things are, what places are like and how people and nature shape the world we live in.

Geography lessons are lively and engaging, helping pupils to build a strong understanding of the local area, the United Kingdom and the wider world. Children learn about countries, continents and oceans, as well as physical and human features such as rivers, mountains, cities and villages.

We bring geography to life through local fieldwork, school trips, visitors and practical activities. Children might explore their local environment, use maps and globes, carry out surveys or investigate how weather, landscapes and settlements affect people’s lives. These real‑life experiences help children to make meaningful links between their learning and the world around them.

Hands‑on learning is at the heart of our geography teaching. Pupils enjoy using maps, atlases, aerial photographs, digital tools and fieldwork equipment to explore places and investigate geographical questions. They learn to collect information, observe carefully and share what they have discovered.

As children move through the school, they develop important geographical skills, such as map reading, using compass directions, understanding scale and recognising patterns in the natural and human world. They begin to explore big ideas such as how places change, how people depend on their environment, and how we can look after our planet.

By the time pupils leave our school, we want them to have a strong understanding of the world, confidence in thinking and talking like geographers, and a sense of responsibility and curiosity that encourages them to care for the Earth and the people who live on it.

Our Curriculum Aims

At Darton Primary School, our Geography curriculum aims to inspire children to develop a lifelong curiosity about the world and an understanding of the people, places and environments that shape it. Through a carefully sequenced curriculum, pupils develop a secure understanding of the United Kingdom and the wider world, exploring diverse locations, physical and human features, and the relationships between people and their environments. We aim to develop curious, knowledgeable and thoughtful geographers who ask questions, investigate geographical patterns, interpret information and understand how places are similar, different and interconnected.

Through engaging, hands-on learning experiences, including fieldwork, mapwork, the use of geographical sources and educational visits, pupils develop the skills to observe, collect and analyse data, draw conclusions and develop a deeper understanding of the world around them. Our curriculum encourages children to explore the key geographical concepts of location, place, human and physical processes, and geographical skills, making connections between local, national and global environments. Pupils are also encouraged to consider environmental challenges, understand the impact of human activity and recognise their responsibilities as global citizens. Our curriculum reflects our school values of inclusion, positivity, kindness, respect, honesty and curiosity, ensuring that every child is supported to develop their geographical knowledge, understanding and enquiry skills.

Ultimately, we want our children to leave Darton Primary School with a strong foundation of geographical knowledge, the confidence to question and interpret the world around them, and an appreciation of the diversity and interconnectedness of people and places. We aim to nurture responsible, informed global citizens who are curious about the world and motivated to make a positive difference, ready to Aim High, Work Hard, Achieve Together.

How We Teach Geography At DPS

At Darton Primary School, our Geography curriculum aims to inspire children to develop a lifelong curiosity about the world and an understanding of the human and physical processes that shape it. Through a carefully sequenced curriculum, pupils develop a secure understanding of the United Kingdom and the wider world, exploring diverse places, landscapes, environments and communities. Our curriculum is underpinned by the HCAT key concepts of Human, Physical, Places and Locations, Environments and Topography, People and Settlements, Weather, Climate and Seasons, and Map Work and Fieldwork. These concepts are revisited throughout the curriculum, enabling pupils to build on prior learning, make meaningful connections and develop an increasingly sophisticated understanding of the world.

We aim to develop curious, knowledgeable and thoughtful geographers who ask questions, investigate geographical patterns and processes, and understand the relationships between people and their environments. Through engaging, practical learning experiences, including mapwork, fieldwork, the interpretation of geographical sources and educational visits, pupils develop the skills to observe, collect and analyse data, draw conclusions and communicate their findings. They explore how places are similar and different, how environments change over time and how human activity influences the physical world. Our curriculum also encourages children to consider environmental challenges, recognise their responsibilities as global citizens and appreciate the diversity and interconnectedness of people and places.

Our Geography curriculum reflects our school values of inclusion, positivity, kindness, respect, honesty and curiosity, ensuring that every child is supported to develop the geographical knowledge, understanding and enquiry skills they need to succeed. Through carefully planned progression and the deliberate revisiting of key concepts, pupils develop secure knowledge and the confidence to apply their understanding in a range of geographical contexts.

Ultimately, we want our children to leave Darton Primary School with a strong foundation of geographical knowledge, the ability to interpret and question the world around them, and a genuine appreciation of the people, places and environments that make our world unique. We aim to nurture informed, responsible and curious global citizens who are motivated to make a positive difference, ready to Aim High, Work Hard, Achieve Together.
